“Ugh!” Joe cried for the hundredth time. “Dorothea Williams saw me! What am I going to do? She’s going to think I’m crazy!”

They climbed the steps to Joe’s apartment building. 22 was busy with another piece of pizza.

“Maybe you should call her up and tell her that we’re not crazy!” Joe suggested.

“I’ve only been a person for an hour, and even I know that’s a bad idea,” 22 replied.

22 opened the door to Joe’s apartment, then quickly shut it behind her, collapsing against it with a sigh of relief.

Joe leaped down from her shoulders and paced the floor, trying to think if there was any possible way to save the situation. “I’ve just got to get back in my body and really bring it tonight,” he decided.

22 didn’t reply. When Joe looked over, he saw she had her nose in her armpit, busily sniffing.

“How come this part is stinky? But this part smells fine?” she asked, pointing to Joe’s forearm.

“Never mind.” Joe flicked his tail toward a pile of dirty laundry. “Just put those pants on. I can’t believe I’ve been walking around in this city with no pants on.”

“I don’t even want to be here, remember!” 22 said as she struggled to pull up the pants. At last she managed to get them on. Backward.

Joe paced through a patch of sunlight. “I don’t want you here, either….” A huge yawn overtook him. The sunlight was having a strange effect on him. His entire body seemed to melt into a small furry puddle. He couldn’t keep his eyes open.

“I just want to…get my body back…and get back to the…club,” Joe murmured between yawns. He flopped down in the warm square of light, purring.

Bzzzz! Bzzzzz! The sound of his cell phone jerked Joe out of his doze.

“Your clothes are rumbling again,” 22 said. She pulled the buzzing phone from the pocket of the hospital gown.

Joe lunged and tried to grab it, forgetting once again that he had paws. The phone flipped like a cat toy as he batted it with his furry mitts. It clattered to the ground and fell silent.

Joe saw four missed calls from Curley. He groaned. Whatever Curley had to say, it couldn’t be good. With a sinking feeling, Joe played the voice mail.

“Hey, Mr. G. It’s Curley. Um…I hope you’re doing okay. Dorothea freaked out when she saw you. And she called this other guy, Robert. He’s got the gig now. Sorry.”

“No, no, no!” Joe wailed.

There was a pause, then Curley continued. “Honestly, your class was the only reason I went to school at all. I owe you a lot. So, here’s the plan. Clean yourself up, put on a killer suit, and get to the club early. I’m going to try to talk to her.”

Joe gasped. He still had a chance!

“Just make sure you show up looking like a million bucks, all right? I hope to see you, man. Peace.”

“I can get the gig back!” Joe cried. “22, I need your help! I have a suit. I’m going to need you to try it on.
